Course Pedagogy:
- The material in the E-Commerce simulation is sequenced to step
the student through four sets of trial decisions. The first trial
decision set allows student teams to sell stock, which will result
in their first balance sheet. Gradually the complexity is increased
until the student has a full set of financial statements and decision
options. The focus is not on accounting but the use of
accounting, economic and market research data to make strategic
business decisions.
- The students will experience team decision making and team building.
Collaboration within a team is very natural.
- Mentoring is provided as advanced students from around the world
provide guidance to their "client" teams. Beginning students are
placed into B-to-B relationships with advanced students. It is
in the interest of the advanced teams to make sure their client
teams do well.
- Students rapidly pick up many of the skills needed to function
in today's technology driven "new economy". Global communication,
Internet, team building and negotiating skills will be developed.
- Students and instructors both have a learning curve as they
adapt to this new pedagogy. Students need to be encouraged to
become partners in their own education. Information needed for
decision making may be partially presented one week and then expanded
upon three weeks later in an integrated manner. Students are rarely
done with the knowledge they gain. It continually evolves throughout
the course. These new experiences provide for great learning potential,
but they take some time and effort on the instructor's part. Students
are very motivated by the learning environment created, but may
be unaccustomed to the challenge of knowledge application in the
decision making process.
